One
way of spreading the expense of country home construction out
over the years is through the use of backbuildings or
outbuildings. Yesterday’s farmers expanded their farmsteads
with specialized buildings for each new crop or product and for
each improvement in their life-styles. They built barns, silos,
corn cribs, wood sheds, smoke houses, work shops, spring houses,
carriage houses, stables and more. Today, you may not need an
ice house or outdoor privy, but there is no reason why a home
office, studio, library, garage, garden shed, game room or pool
house couldn’t be built as a separate building.
Build
small now, and add to your place as you need it. You’ll save
cost and, in the end, have a better country place. You’ll find
that your ideas and needs change over the years. The place that
you let evolve over time will work better for you than any
building you can imagine now. And, it’s usually much easier to
add or renovate a small freestanding outbuilding than it is to
make substantial changes to a house.
