Good ideas from the
past on how to plan and design an attractive, easy-to-build and
easy-to-maintain home in the country.
It will be
apparent, without special argument, that our choice of style in
our country houses should be controlled essentially by the
climate. In northern climate, the flat roof is objectionable.
The hot summer sun will be more than likely to open the joints
and seams of the flat roof, and the sudden shower coming down
with the force of a tropical storm, will find its way through,
sadly to the detriment of our ceilings, our stuccoes and
frescoes, as well as to the comfort and the commendable
equability of temper of those who suffer the invasion. The heavy
winter snows, too, require a steep roof, from which they will
readily dislodge themselves without Injury.
And so in the interior
arrangements of the house the provisions for heating and
ventilation, for summer freedom and winter coziness, for
domestic comfort and the exercise of the commendable grace of
country hospitality, due regard must be had to the conditions of
climate. There must be a proper adaptation to them, if we would
secure satisfactory country homes.
