Carriage House converted into a Cottage

Convert an Old Building

Good ideas from the past on how to plan and design an attractive, easy-to-build and easy-to-maintain home in the country.

If your country property has an old building on it, consider a creative renovation. Because they tend to have large open spaces, old barns, carriage houses and garages are fairly easy to convert into homes. You’ll save some cost and save a bit of our heritage.

This cottage, from the 1856 book, Village & Farm Cottages, was converted from an old coach-house. The 20 x 20’ floor area is just about the same as a modern two-car garage. The owner built a new steep roof to provide a second floor with usable space, then added the partitions, windows, doors and verandah that you see. The term, "Living Room," in the 19th century, simply meant the room in which the family members spent most of their time. In this design, it’s a combination kitchen and dining room.
