Good ideas from the
past on how to plan and design an attractive, easy-to-build and
easy-to-maintain home in the country.
Are you building a home at the
seaside or in rolling country? There is probably a view that
would be much more dramatic from the second floor. This 1867
cottage design, by architect George E. Harney, shows one way of
taking advantage of the vista. By building the roof of the entry
porch higher and using the space created as an open balcony, the
architect captured views and cool night breezes. In winter,
storm windows change the space into a "conservatory,"
a sunny, protected spot for potted plants that wouldn’t
survive the cold.
